On January 9, 1964 there were riots that took place over the Panama Canal Zone.
There was a conflict about the Panamanian flag flying next to the U.S. flag in which the Panamanian flag was torn.
The conflict took place between Canal Zone officers and students from Panama.
The U.S. Army got involved after the violence escalated.
The outrage soon became uncontrollable.
Finally, after three days of fighting the incidence was over.
There were four U.S. soldiers and 21 Panamanians killed.
More than 500 people were injured.
This is one of the events that was taken into consideration when the United States transferred the control of the Panama Canal back to Panama.
Panama Commemorates Martyr’s Day
